COVID-19

So... What will it be like?
Due to the current situation some of our activities may be slightly different.

Training in term 1

TASTER SESSION BOOKING NOW OPEN
The first two weeks of sessions are free taster sessions (you won't need a membership to attend)! Due to Covid-19, Warwick Sport has a booking system in place so you will need to book onto our taster sessions before attending:
  1. Go to the Warwick Sport website
  2. Make sure you're logged in with your university student number and Click 'Book an activity'
  3. Search for 'zz lifesaving'
  4. Select and book onto the sessions you wish to attend
  5. Check the details and submit your booking!
Please note that we have a finite number of places available so please only book onto a session if you're actually going to turn up to prevent others from missing out! Booking can be done up to 7 days in advance and cancelled anytime
Fitness and Speeds training
*UPDATE* 05/10/20 (sorry for the delay)
The 'Rule of 6' will apply to us. This will not however have much of an impact on speeds training. The only changes are we will have to go down to 6 per lane. This should not be much of an issue.

24/09/20
Following the new government guidance that states the 'Rule of 6' is now extended to indoor team sports, we are reviewing how this will affect our training. Our National Governing Body, RLSS, have yet to release specific guidance on this but we believe that Speeds and fitness training may be unaffected. We will be monitoring this closely to ensure we maintain safe procedures for our training sessions.

13/9/20
We are now allowed to use the pool from 5th October! Our training times have been altered slightly to allow for cleaning and distancing between sessions, you can view these updated times throughout our website and on our social media. This means we are now able to run FREE taster sessions throughout weeks 1 and 2 - click here to find out more!!

25/08/20
The pool is currently closed to university clubs - this will obviously affect Speeds and Competition training sessions. It is scheduled to open to University Clubs early November but we are hoping to see it open sooner since the pool is now open to the public.
SERC training
*UPDATE* 05/10/20 (sorry for the delay)
The 'Rule of 6' will apply to us. SERCs will look rather different and there is to be no person-person contact which will make training rather difficult. We have the abbility to comply with the guidelines on CPR and we have a number of ways to deliver the other parts of training.

24/09/20
Following the new government guidance that states the 'Rule of 6' is now extended to indoor team sports, we are reviewing how this will affect our training. Our National Governing Body, RLSS, have yet to release specific guidance on this but we believe SERC training may be affected by this rule. We will update you when this is released - some of the possibilities we are looking into is running an NPLQ course during our training sessions since this is not a team sport, and splitting up our dry training sessions into multiple rooms of 6 - watch this space for more details!

25/08/20
To follow social distancing guidelines some of the activities involved in SERC training may not be possible, however we will adapt first aid training to comply with guidelines. We hope to hold in-person training sessions - we are currently planning how we will incorporate COVID-19 safe procedures into our training sessions such as use of outside space and large rooms.

Socials

*UPDATE* 12/09/20
We will be updating all our social plans to comply with the new 'Rule of 6' announcement - we are planning to adapt our in person socials to smaller groups in addition to our online socials.

25/08/20
Socials are an integral part of our club, and as such will definitely be going ahead in Term 1! We are planning a blend of in person socials such as outdoor picnics, restaurant/pub trips and online socials - feel free to come to either or a mixture! If we are prevented from meeting one another in person by government guidelines, we will run exclusively online socials, such as Kahoot! quizzes, games like Psych!, and maybe even attempt an online circle. These were a great success over lockdown earlier in the year!

Competitions

*UPDATE* 24/09/20
Our first league competition of the calendar has been officially postponed, Bristol are hoping to reschedule this some time within Term 2.

25/08/20
Unfortunately, some of our usual competitions may be cancelled or postponed this academic year.
Currently, all BULSCA university league competitions, BULSCA Championships and Speeds competitions are planned as going ahead but we will keep you updated during daily training sessions, emails and social media platforms.

Courses and qualifications

*UPDATE* 22/10/20
Due to the closure of Warwick Room Booking System to students with current risk level of public health, it is very unlikely to be able to organize EFAW or NPLQ on campus before Term 2. We will keep on updating with the university and government's policies. We are also reviewing the plan of the End of Term 2 NPLQ so that we can get back on track when the restrictions are lifted.

24/09/20
Good news!! We can confirm that we are still able to run courses in a COVID safe manner due to the extensive guidance provided by RLSS. We hope to see you there!

18/08/20
We are currently planning the following qualifications (but please message us if there's a course you'd like to do that's not listed)
  • National Pool Lifeguard Qualification (NPLQ) - this is the prerequisite to bagging yourself a job on campus or elsewhere as a pool lifeguard!
  • Emergency First Aid at Work/First Aid at Work (EFAW/FAW)
  • Lifesaving Instructor
  • more courses can be organised on request such as open water and beach lifeguard qualifications.
A 5-day NPLQ may be available at the end of Term 1 or Term 2, dependent on the level of the public health risk and the demand.
Please fill in this Google Form if you are interested in taking part to remain updated.
We are happy to respond and check for the availability.

*Club members will enjoy special discounts on courses organised by the club* - so head over to the SU website and purchase a Lifesaving Club membership (£6 if you are a member of another sports club already) to earn yourself a hefty discount!
For more courses details, please visit a lifesaving courses summary here.
