Training

Due to COVID-19 our training sessions may look a little different. Click the button below to see our current training plan.
COVID-19

We have four flexible training sessions per week but we understand how busy university life is so attendance to all sessions is definitely not compulsory! Feel free to join us whenever you can make it for any session (or half session!)

Speeds Training
Tuesday

16:30-18:30 at the Swimming Pool
This hour will see our Speeds Training Officer, Jack, leading a session containing all things speeds! For league comps (the main focus for term one) dedicated purely to practising speeds relay events; term 2 will see focus shift to individual events.
Typical sessions include:
  • diving under obstacle gates mid-length
  • swimming underwater with fins
  • towing each other and manikins on torpedo buoys
  • anything else you can spot in this demo video!

Fitness and Wet SERCs
Friday

16:00-18:00 at the Swimming Pool
Our Wednesday training sessions consist of a unique swim set, designed specifically by our Speeds Training Officer, Jack, to improve fitness levels and work on both swimming skills and more specific lifesaving speeds skills. These sessions are a great way to keep fit in the pool together as a group and because they involve lifesaving speeds skills, are much more fun than a general swimming set would be! Don't worry if you haven't done much swimming before, or equally if you are a competitive swimmer: we have a massive range of swimming ability in the club which these sessions cater for.
The second half is overseen by our SERCs Training Officer, Joanne. She will teach first aid skills required for our courses, and then put these into use in practise SERCs (optional but very fun!)

Dry SERCs and First Aid
Thursday

18:00-20:00 at the Westwood Lecture Room
This session is taken by our SERC and First Aid Training Officer, Joanne. The first half of this session will be dedicated to general first aid skills ranging from learning how to tie slings to practising CPR. The second half of this training session will be where we put those skills into practice with various dry team based SERCs (Simulated Emergency Response Competitions).

Speeds and Wet SERCs
Sunday

10:00-12:00 at the Swimming Pool
This session is dedicated to competition training - not that you need to sign up to any competitions to attend! The first half is taken by the Speeds officer, Jack, where we go though techniques and train for league events. The second half is dedicated to SERC training specific to wet SERCs. This will be taken by our SERC officer, Joanne. This session is also used for courses and qualifications so please turn up if you are interested in these! The course coordinator, N/A, will be organising this so please contact them if you have any questions.
